We built an ERP around the way the plant already works rather than forcing an off-the-shelf process on it. Inventory, production orders, purchase management and quality control share one database, so a purchase order, the production run it feeds and the QC record for that run are linked. Each department enters its data once, and reports are generated from the live records.
Production planning, purchasing and stock were tracked in separate spreadsheets kept by different people. Nobody could see live inventory, purchase orders drifted out of step with what the shop floor was actually making, and every management report meant someone collating sheets by hand.
